Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is National Plan for Vacation Day. Ironically, it coincides with the Steamship Authority opening up its online reservations. After several years of problems that included outright system crashes, things seem to have gone smoother this year. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Schools of thought
It’s a big couple of days for Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Superintendent is going from Zoom to Zoom requesting that the towns sign a letter of support for funding from the Massachusetts School Building Authority. The first stop — Edgartown — was a success. Later today, D’Andrea will be before Chilmark and then Oak Bluffs. Tomorrow it’s on to West Tisbury and Tisbury. Reporter Brian Dowd has the story.
Woman injured
A woman was seriously injured Monday night as she crossed in a crosswalk near Five Corners in Vineyard Haven. Police told The Times that distracted driving appears to be the cause of the crash. The woman was reportedly airlifted off the Island. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.

Farewell to Steve
When we heard that Steve Myrick had died, we asked one of his old friends and colleagues to pay tribute to the former Times reporter. Janet Hefler said yes and shared this anecdote-filled tribute to Steve. We also received a loving tribute from Myrick’s brother. You can read that here.

Quote of the Day
"When questioned, Ms. Tobin was unclear when her firearm went missing. Ms. Tobin was unsure if it was missing for one week or several months. Ms. Tobin was unsure of where the firearm was being stored. Ms. Tobin has demonstrated a complete lack of accountability for her firearm, which is a public safety risk."
–Edgartown District Court Judge Benjamin Barnes in his written decision denying Catherine Tobin’s request to get her license to carry reinstated

Hot Topic Comment
Toni Kauffman commented on the March for Voting Rights that was recently canceled due to cold weather. "Once something like this is canceled, it does not prevent anyone from still participating if they chose to do so. Whether it’s hundreds or a much smaller number, the cause and meaning for the event is not lost. Ten folks, which included a hearty (much more than I) 4 year old actually did march. I joined them at the boat launch."

Hot Topic Letter
Andrew Myrick pays tribute to his brother, Steve, a former Times reporter. "Steve was well-known on Martha’s Vineyard, and lived life to the fullest there. His stories of Joe and other characters struck readers of both the Gazette and the Times. His daughters spent many happy days on the water and on the Island. I was so honored to accompany Steve to Offshore Ale, where they always found space for him."
Today: You’re never ever too old to learn something new. Join the Aquinnah library in this Knitting for All Ages program. Beginners are welcome, and that would be me. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

The Vineyard Haven library’s Online Spice Club is covering my absolute favorite spice tonight:
Cumin Seed Powder. I put it in everything. I make an entree with this spice at least twice a week. I’d probably eat a cumin popsicle if someone offered it to me. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: ACLU Massachusetts offers a webinar, What a Difference a D.A. Makes. It’s a campaign to highlight the role district attorneys play in the administration of justice. Very timely don’t you think? Thanks to the League of Women Voters M.V. and a whole lot of other folks for putting this together. 6 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?

Our talented intern from summers’ past, Shelby Regan, taught us how to make Veggie Burgers from scratch with this bean-based burger recipe. They look so good that we might just give up red meat for 24 hours, then it’s right back to liver and onions in the newsroom.

Exploring the past
Research librarian at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Bow Van Riper, has been digging into history his entire life such that his mind is filled with interesting facts about the Vineyard. Not only is Van Riper an invaluable asset and source of information for Islanders, but his immense knowledge allows seasonal visitors to get context for all the fascinating and unique sights and experiences available here right when they hop off the boat in Vineyard Haven. Check out writer Abby Remer’s story about Van Riper and take a trip back through Martha’s Vineyard history by visiting the library.
