Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s Valentine’s Day. If you’re just reading this now, you still have time to run out and get some flowers, chocolates, or both. Also, can you picture famous Islander Barack Obama passing up the presidency to direct "Leatherheads?" It almost happened. Be sure to check out the dateline (that’s a newspaper term, not a Valentine’s Day reference.). If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Big scoop
You may not be feeling much like an ice cream cone today, but when Mad Martha’s reopens for the season in Vineyard Haven it will be in a new location. Brook Katzen, the owner of the Mad Martha’s brand, purchased 24 Union Street to give the ice cream shop a little more room to breathe. Editor George Brennan has this story.
Zoned out
There’s a dispute going on between neighbors of Peter Goodale in Oak Bluffs. The site was being used as a contractor’s yard, which is what spurred some abutters to go to the town to seek a cease and desist order. On Thursday, the zoning board of appeals will consider Goodale’s request to allow the remaining tenant — Working Earth — to continue using the property. Reporter Brian Dowd has the details. Meanwhile, a West Tisbury couple has withdrawn a proposal to demolish a home on Indian Hill that was before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has that story.

We knew Jack
We are mourning the loss of friend and colleague Jack Shea. We learned from his daughter that Jack died Sunday morning at a Florida hospital. He was admitted five days earlier after suffering cardiac arrest. Jack was a great guy and if you knew him it’s likely you were a friend. He was an old-school journalist who loved to tell stories, particularly on Martha’s Vineyard. Editor George Brennan pays tribute to Jack with a little help from Jack’s friends.

Quote of the Day
"I will never go back in the building. That’s why I quit. Because I don’t feel safe. My husband is scared. I’m scared."
–Meegan Lancaster on the shell casings she found in a tote bag in her Oak Bluffs office

Hot Topic Comment
Marina Lent, the health agent in Chilmark, commented on the resignation of Meegan Lancaster. "This is a big loss for Oak Bluffs. You will not easily find someone who brings to the table as much as she did. And a big loss for public health on Martha’s Vineyard. I will miss working with Meegan as the Oak Bluffs health agent."

Hot Topic Letter
Maura McGroarty wrote to respond to another letter writer on the funding formula for Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. "As I understand it, the initial funding, when the district was created, was through two mechanisms: capital costs and operating costs. In 1989 Amendment II created a new protocol for funding, providing for both operating and capital costs to be funded based on each town's enrollment. It would be useful if we knew why."
Today: I’m not sure how this piece of pie photo equates to Online Dining with Diabetes, but I do know you can make dessert in some surprisingly healthy ways. I speak from experience, and as someone who polished off a bag of Hershey Kisses and had to go get another bag for my Valentines. 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry

Online Writers Read happens tonight. Bring your work or just listen to the work of others. But don’t be shy. Bring your work. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Join the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club’s monthly meeting, Planning for Success, via the Edgartown library. Never mind that white stuff outside your window, it’s time we started thinking about spring. 1 pm. –C.B.

Friday’s correct answer: Peter Boak
Toxic chocolate
Why is it that us humans can devour an entire box of chocolates and walk away from Valentine’s Day with little more than an upset stomach, while our beloved four-legged friends should avoid the substance at all costs? Chocolate contains chemicals called methylxanthines, which are more present in dark and milk chocolate, and are highly toxic to dogs. When in doubt, collect your information, then call your veterinarian or Animal Poison Control to assess your pet’s condition. Visiting Vet columnist Michelle Jerhard Jasny tells you just what to do in her recent piece.
