Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 2004, Facebook was launched by a very young Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard University. Today is National Homemade Soup Day. If you’ve been following our dine section, you know we love homemade soups. Today seems like a great day for some Chicken Rotisserie Soup. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Alarming discovery
Lead has been detected in the drinking water at two Vineyard Haven schools after testing conducted by the town’s water department. Both Tisbury School and Vineyard Montessori had one sink in each school test positive for lead and as a result have made those water sources off limits. Reporter Rich Saltzberg and editor George Brennan have this story.
Banking on it
Two bills that would allow for a transfer fee on real estate and ultimately a housing bank on Martha’s Vineyard are still alive on Beacon Hill. One committee reported out favorably on the bill and another has hit the pause button for a few months. Advocates for the transfer fee and the housing bank see it all as a positive sign. This is a combo story between the State House News Service and The Times. You can read it here.

Growth with it
Island Grown Initiative was back before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission on Thursday to discuss a proposed expansion at their Tisbury farm. There was talk of an archaeological survey that was done, although details weren’t made public. South Mountain CEO John Abrams, who is working with IGI on the expansion, said they will be able to avoid any sensitive areas. Reporter Brian Dowd has this story.
MEETINGS
The Edgartown select board meets at 4 pm Monday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional School committee meets at 6 pm Monday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"Putting my personal opinion aside, looking out for the best of the town and the Agricultural Society — one time only — I’ll vote yes."
West Tisbury select board chair Skipper Manter, who typically abstains from voting on Ag Society matters because of his objection to how the property is being used

Hot Topic Comment
Geraldine Brooks responded to the latest story about PFAS and the field project at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. "It’s ridiculous that after all this time we still don’t know who these ‘donors’ are, and meanwhile taxpayers are being shaken down repeatedly at town meetings for the design studies etc. Anyone who thinks we won’t all bear the cost of this folly over time is delusional."

Hot Topic Letter
Michael Ditchfield wrote to say that Jose and Jennifer Abreu deserve the community’s support and compassion. "My own citizenship was delayed for months because my fingerprints had expired. Think about that. Fingerprints. Expired. I had to go to Boston to have them taken again. I can say with confidence that they hadn’t changed."
Today: Join my writing colleague and wellness leader Valerie Sonnenthal for a Restorative Sound Journey. When you have an opportunity to take care of yourself, I say do it. 7 pm. –Connie Berry

Do you blame your couch potato ways on the weather? I do, all the time. With so much land to hike and walk, and with the temperatures not that bad lately, we really could dress for the weather and get out there. Try Sheriff’s Meadow Trails and Beaches anytime. –C.B.
This weekend: We all know there’s a housing problem, so here’s a chance to be part of the solution: Council Meeting: Coalition to Create the M.V. Housing Bank. Saturday morning. Virtual. 9 am. Cooking with Carolina is on the Oak Bluffs’ library’s FB page. Every time I think about this, I want to start "Cooking with Connie" and then I remember I have no time. 5 pm. The M.V. Film Center screens "Licorice Pizza" Saturday night. I’m curious about Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son Cooper in this film. 7:30 pm.

Sunday is actually busier than Saturday this weekend. Pick up a Craft Bag for kids, teens, or adults at the Vineyard Haven library. 10 am to noon. The library also hosts a virtual treat: Revisit Elizabeth Whelan’s Summer of Drawing. 11 am. Pathways never runs out of ideas. Join them for the second Artist Talk, this one with Wendy Weldon and Rob Hauck, at the Chilmark Tavern in-person or virtually on Zoom. 2 pm. At the West Tisbury library, join Andy Herr for a Virtual Uke Class. 2:30 pm. This rain is getting old isn’t it? I’m ready for my Saturday spot on the big comfy couch with my diet ice cream and hot tea. –C.B.
