Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day two years ago, Gov. Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency. We all know what came next. In our editorial this week, we applaud the efforts by the Island healthcare community in the face of misinformation. It’s National Pack Your Lunch Day and it’s also National Blueberry Popover Day. Fun fact, we love packing our own lunches and sometimes they even include popovers. Here’s a pretty good popover recipe. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

PEER pressure
A federal nonprofit is upping the pressure against what it calls unfair and deceptive marketing practices by the manufacturers of synthetic turf fields. The fields have been a hot-button issue across the country and right here at home as MVRHS is proposing to add one to a sports complex at the high school. The Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) has filed a complaint saying the manufacturers have violated the Federal Trade Commission Act. Reporter Lucas Thors
has this update.

SSA bill revisited
Tristan Israel, in his role as a county commissioner, testified before a state legislative committee asking them to hold off on legislation that calls for adding a chief operating officer at the Steamship Authority and setting term limits for SSA board members. Meanwhile, the Dukes County Commission continues to rail over the fact that they weren’t consulted by legislators before the bill was filed. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the update. Also, you won't want to miss this breaking news from regarding the SSA's vaccine mandate.

Taking it off
The West Tisbury select board will leave it up to individual building directors whether to require masks inside their buildings. At a meeting on Wednesday, the board decided to lift the overall mandate, but made it clear that individual building directors can impose requirements of their own. It comes at a time when the number of COVID-19 cases on the Island has dropped dramatically. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story.
MEETINGS
There are no meetings scheduled for tomorrow. It’s Fri-yay!

Quote of the Day
"Let’s try to get everybody together. I mean, that’s all we can do. If people refuse to sit at a table with us, then it’s a nonstarter. And you know what, if somebody won’t show up at a table, then Oak Bluffs certainly isn’t the issue."–Oak Bluffs select board member Ryan Ruley on the funding formula for a high school project

Hot Topic Comment
Peter Kretschmann commented on a story about the Tisbury select board, which includes a proposal for a Proposition 2½ override. "So, our house was reassessed earlier in the year, and with the school funding increase my taxes went up by 50%!!!!!!!! Now they want almost $200 more on top of that? They are taxing retired all year residents off the island."

Hot Topic Letter
Nancy and Joel Aronie point out that despite the increase in gas prices, an Island station is continuing to offer discounts. "With gas prices surging all over the country, we just want to acknowledge the fact that the Jenkinson family is serving our community from the heart, not from the pocketbook."

On the ball
Congratulations to Kaleb Hatt on being selected for the Shriners All-Star football game. Kaleb played for the MVRHS football team for four years and was a captain in his senior year. He was nominated by Coach Donald Herman for the honor for his strong work ethic as a player on both sides of the ball. Editor George Brennan has this story. And in other sports news, Graham Stearns and the MVRHS boys hockey team have been recognized for their sportsmanship during the season. George also has this story. Be sure to watch the video of Graham’s classy gesture during an overtime win.
