Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Did you know today is National Chili Day? Where is George Brennan when you need him? Probably someplace warm where they never eat chili. Happy Birthday to another George today — George Thorogood. He’s bad to the bone. We also wanted to let you know we updated one of our stories: the Seafood Collaborative is open, but they’ve closed their public sales program. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School was recommended by the Massachusetts School Building Authority to be accepted into its highly competitive grant program. The decision came as welcome news to school officials. The MSBA will finalize its list of schools. Reporter Lucas Thors has the story here.
Storm-a-brewin
Winterstorm Oaklee is on its way to the East Coast, but the Vineyard will only get some snow and rain, according to the National Weather Service. Reporter Brian Dowd has the story.

Missing gun leads to charges
An Edgartown woman who lost her gun is now being charged. Catherine Tobin previously had her license to carry firearms suspended by Edgartown Police after she allegedly waited too many days to report a .380 caliber Sig Sauer pistol missing. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the details.

A Private Compound on 28 Acres Sponsored

This is a lovely estate with over 28 private acres in a pastoral setting in West Tisbury. The main home overlooks a spring fed pond, old stone walls and open meadows. There is a private pool nestled on the side of the home surrounded by mature gardens. The home is in wonderful condition and has so many private spaces that lend themselves to the outdoors. There are three additional dwellings onsite making it easy to create a family compound as well as housing for help with the property or caretaking. There is also an impressive barn with 8 stalls and a turnout shed.
Quote of the Day
"This means that we are one of 17 schools the state will support financially and with design/build/management expertise for either a new build or a major school renovation. We have worked for years to secure this support, and have finally made the cut!"— Principal Sara Dingledy in response to the news of the high school being accepted into the MSBA program

Hot Topic Comment
Commenter Woody Williams liked The Times’ coverage of the bylaw requiring people to shovel Tisbury’s snowy sidewalks: "Keep digging Rich! ‘Tisbury is broken.’ No sense in giving out fines. A quick example, my neighbor was in violation of several building violations. Illegally storing his illegal business equipment on his property in a residential district. They had also dug holes and destroyed my buried electrical lines! Killed the power to my home! All of this was Immediately reported to all the proper town authorities and totally documented with dozens of pictures included. I was out $1,000.00, my insurance company paid over $4,400.00 to get things repaired and at last count which was well over two plus years ago his fines `then totaled` over $7,000.00 and not one penny had been collected to my knowledge. His business equipment was temporarily removed then not long after he brought some equipment back, stored it differently and is still being stored on the property there to this day. I gave up hounding everyone for enforcement! Keep digging Rich! ‘Tisbury is totally broken’ and we deserve more for having the highest tax rate on the Vineyard."

Hot Topic Letter
Nan Schanbacher takes issue with SSA’s reconstruction project: "There is, and has been all along, something wrong with the picture of the Steamship Authority’s Woods Hole reconstruction project. Who or what is actually driving this monstrous, overblown, landside development? I’m sure the Vineyarders don’t want more and more cars clogging their roads, even if the crowds drive their economy."
Today: First off, volunteer J.P. Hitesman called to let us know that the Serving Hands food distribution scheduled for tomorrow at the First Baptist Church has been postponed. It’s now going to happen on Monday, Feb. 28, at 1:30 at the church. I figured it’s OK to stick with a food theme. I’m happy to report that Chef Look whips up Shrimp and Grits Cajun-style tonight. Edgartown library. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

My lovely friend Rose Guerin plays at Sweet Life tonight with Jodie Treloar. A couple of songbirds, my friends. Those sparkly lights reel me into that patio every time. The food is fabulous too. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The M.V. Film Center plays the Oscar-Nominatedrt Films, gearing up for the big event in March. You can read a preview by Brooks Robards here. 4 pm. –C.B.

Vacation recreation
Winter break is almost here, when kids will get a chance to unwind, enjoy some nice weather, and spend quality time with family. But there are also plenty of fun opportunities for children during the vacation that get them out of the house, outdoors, and enjoying activities and adventures with their peers. No matter age or interest, Polly Hill Arboretum, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard, and other organizations are making sure no student is bored this winter break. Times writer Abby Remer has the story.
