Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1959, rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson were killed in a plane crash — also known as the day the music died. Today is also National Carrot Cake Day and Optimist Day. We’re going to be optimistic that someone will produce a piece of carrot cake for us later today. Checking his list
It’s no secret that West Tisbury select board member Skipper Manter has had issues with the use of the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society property. Because the board now only has two members (Kent Healy passed away last year), it appeared the Ag Society’s upcoming schedule might be in jeopardy. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo was there and has the story.
Sizing it up
Also in West Tisbury, the planning board has approved a much talked about proposed bylaw that would reduce the sizes of houses in town. The bylaw still needs to go before a public hearing, it has to go before town meeting voters, and ultimately will have to be signed off on by the attorney general’s office. A busy Eunki Seonwoo also has this update.

Soft landing
Airport commission chair Bob Rosenbaum made an appearance on the county commission agenda Wednesday. It was an upbeat report about the airport’s relationship with the commission, as well as with the tenants in the Airport Business Park. But there is some turbulence ahead with the need to upgrade the airport’s wastewater treatment system. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.

Quote of the Day
"For the first time in five decades, there was a shift of majority seasonal to majority year-round at 51 percent. Clearly that’s an indication there was an increase in population."–Martha’s Vineyard Commission affordable housing planner Christine Flynn on population and housing data released by the Census

Hot Topic Comment
John Zarba commented on the passing of Joseph Re. "Joe was a great guy. Stood up for what was right and served his community with honor. Fair seas and following winds Captain."

Hot Topic Letter
Mary Ellen Larsen wrote to say how the community reached out to seniors during the recent blizzard. "The day before the blizzard, I received a call from the Council on Aging to see if there was anything I needed before the storm, i.e. food, medications; would I have any problems if we lost our power? I assured her I would be OK."

Staying in?

Sometimes creativity in the kitchen pays off. These tenders may not look like the kind you get at the drive-through, but designer Nicole Jackson says they taste terrific. In fact, she likes to call them "Love Me Tenders."

Pam and Nat Benjamin are devoted to supporting the small community of Île-à-Vache in Haiti, and their role goes beyond just sailing to the island to deliver much-needed supplies. The two philanthropists have been raising money to pay for teachers and learning materials at the community center in Île-à-Vache, along with the orphanage. Through their fundraising efforts, they have purchased instruments, speakers, large amounts of school and art supplies, and have even paid to lease farmland and pasture space for a community garden and livestock. Read all about the couple’s efforts in writer Abby Remer’s recent story.
