Show of support From protesting to refusing to sell Russian vodka to finding ways to make donations, Vineyarders are showing support for the people of Ukraine who are under attack. Barbara Presser took to the streets with her anti-Putin signs, and businesses have told their distributors they don’t want any more Russian vodka. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story.
Take the COVID plunge For the second week in a row, the Island is averaging just above 3 positive test results per day. That’s after having a record number of cases the month before as the omicron variant made its way through the Island. All of this comes as the Island boards of health are expected to debate the indoor mask mandate at a meeting Wednesday. Reporter Brian Dowd has the update.
Raising a stink? Sewer users in Tisbury will soon be paying more for their wastewater disposal. The town’s wastewater superintendent has come up with a tiered-pricing system that will spread out how users pay for their wastewater disposal based on the amount that’s used. Meanwhile, the new payment system does offer discounts for senior citizens and those who have served in the military. The Town of Tisbury also gets a bit of a break on its wastewater payments. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.

Hot Topic Letter Robert Sherman, president of the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, shared a positive story about the center being reunited with some masks that were donated as the sanctuary reopens. "This story is a good example of two Jewish concepts, a mitzvah and a mench. The mitzvah (blessing) of the donation and exemplary work of officer Silvia. The mench (think of the grandchild who spontaneously carries the grandparents groceries into the house) that both donor and Officer Silvia are."
Today:"To Sir, with Love" plays at the M.V. Playhouse’s Monday Night at the Movies. I first watched this Sidney Poitier classic with my sister years ago. I think we were eating cheese curls. Great movie. 6 pm. –Connie Berry
Tomorrow:It’s Taco Tuesday at Little House tomorrow. I accidentally had tacos yesterday. Darn it. They’ve got shrimp, beef, chicken, fish, squash, tofu, and pork belly. We didn’t have those choices at my house. 4 to 7:30 pm. –C.B.

Author and professor Frederick Gooding recently gave a Zoom talk via the Oak Bluffs library on the disparity between how many African Americans have received Oscars and how many white people won the highly competitive award. Gooding touches on contemporary examples of race and inequality in Hollywood, and identifies the systemic racism tracing all the way back to the industry’s origins. Read reporter Eunki Seonwoo’s story on the illuminating presentation here.
