Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is the first day of Lent for Christians. And we should mention that we goofed in yesterday’s introduction. Fat Tuesday is, of course, the end of Mardi Gras. We need to get out more. Meanwhile, today is also National Teen Mental Wellness Day, National Banana Cream Pie Day, and National Read Across America Day. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

You’ll no longer have to wear a mask indoors at stores, restaurants, and town buildings on the Island — provided those places don’t impose their own mask mandates. On Wednesday, members of health boards across the Island approved lifting their mask mandate effective immediately. All of this comes as mask mandates are being lifted across the Bay State and country. Reporter Brian Dowd has this story.
Chilmark needs voters to authorize $1.2 million in additional funds for its fire station and Tri-Town Ambulance facility. At a meeting on Tuesday, the select board set the date for a special town meeting that seeks to authorize those funds. Board members blame the escalating price of the project on the worldwide supply chain issues. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.
Despite the initial missteps by Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, U.S Rep. Bill Keating says Americans should be prepared for a long conflict that will have an impact on things like gas prices. In a conversation with reporter Rich Saltzberg ahead of Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, Keating provided his insight on the invasion and the unity against Russia at this point worldwide. You can read it here. Also, Martha’s Vineyard will rally for Ukraine on Saturday at 1 pm at Five Corners.
MEETINGS
The Martha’s Vineyard Commission meets at 7 pm Thursday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"Sling the arrows, I’m expecting there to be some friction and there’s obviously a difference of opinion."–Attorney Jonathan Holter, who is representing Adam Cummings, the owner of a building known as the Lampost building, regarding a modification proposed by his client to allow short-term rental of some of the building’s apartments

Hot Topic Comment
Rita Brown commented on the award given to India Rose. "India works tirelessly on behalf of Black-owned businesses. An honor well deserved! The island community is fortunate to have you in our midst!"

Hot Topic Letter
Alida O’Loughlin wrote about the similarities between what’s happening in Ukraine right now to what she experienced at the hands of Nazi Germany. "Yes, I am the 10-year-old Ukrainian kid whose parents are trying to shelter from Russian bombs — in my case they were German bombs. And no, we did not have a basement to our building or a subway to shelter in. My parents moved our dining table into an interior hall space, and took the mattresses from our beds to cover the tabletop, and that is what we crouched under, my younger brother and I, trying to cover our ears while the city of Rotterdam was being bombed into smithereens to subjugate us."
Today: Learn about Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai in the context of his life and times. You’ll see how he incorporated Western ideas into some of his paintings. Chilmark library 6 pm. –Connie Berry

I want to see this one: "Licorice Pizza." Not only do I love licorice and pizza, but the setting is the 1970s, which I spent in angst-ridden teenagedom. Film Center. 7:30 pm.

Staying in?
It’s Wednesday. No one wants to work two hours in the kitchen on a Wednesday. Might we suggest this $5 recipe for Sausage, Basil, and Arugula Pizza from Sophia McCarron. Sausage and mozzarella never looked so good together.

Faith and climate
Many core tenets within Island faith communities align closely with the values held by activists who fight every day to preserve our delicate environment and to combat climate change. The Times will publish a column series called Faith and Climate each month leading up to Climate Week, May 8 to May 14, highlighting the important connections between the two. Check out Rebecca Gilbert’s first iteration of the new column here.
