Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day 44 years ago, Islanders were digging out from the Blizzard of ‘78. A storm that dumped more than 2 feet of snow, but also caused extensive damage because of its hurricane force winds and storm surge. On the 40th anniversary, Geoff Currier looked back on the blizzard’s Vineyard impact. Today is National Send a Card to a Friend Day and National Fettuccine Alfredo Day. Do not send the fettuccine in a card.  If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Fire and ice
You could call this the fire department news wrap. On Monday afternoon, Tisbury firefighters battled a fire on Main Street in Vineyard Haven at the intersection of Owen Little Way. Flames could be seen coming from the house and black smoke billowed into the air and could be seen for miles. Here is reporter Rich Saltzberg’s story. On Saturday, firefighters from Edgartown and other Island towns battled a fire that caused extensive damage on the Edgartown/Oak Bluffs line. Here’s that story. Meanwhile, on Sunday Edgartown firefighters took advantage of the subfreezing temperatures to do some ice rescue training. Here’s that story.
Chief earns his wings
One minute we had the Fire Chief Greg Leland at our office talking about his recent graduation from Chief Fire Officer Training and the next minute he was putting his skills to the test at the scene of a fire in Vineyard Haven. Chiefs from around the Island congratulated Leland and talked about just what an accomplishment it is for him to complete the training. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.

Weekly cases fall to double digits
COVID cases continue to plummet with 83 cases reported last week. While last week’s report only covered a six day period, the weekly count is down significantly from all-time highs in January. Reporter Brian Dowd has the breakdown here.
MEETINGS

Quote of the Day
"Testing throughout the Town of Tisbury public water supply system has not revealed levels of lead that exceed Massachusetts or federal thresholds for lead in potable water, leading us to conclude that the overall water supply is safe, and that there may be elevated lead levels within the Tisbury School’s pipes and/or faucets."–Ross Seavey, Tisbury’s building commissioner, in a prepared statement about the lead detected in drinking water at the Tisbury School

Hot Topic Comment
James Klingensmith responded to a story about transfer fee bills that are being debated on Beacon Hill. "I am a born native of Martha’s Vineyard, most of my classmates I grew up with have left the Island because there is no place for them to live. Most of our children have left because there is no affordable place to live. The Island Elderly Housing list is so long there is a 3-5 year wait for affordable housing."

Hot Topic Letter
Steve Auerbach wrote to defend the position of Oak Bluffs when it comes to the regional school funding formula. "Oak Bluffs is not the town standing in the way of the towns working collaboratively; the select board of Edgartown has simply refused to discuss the funding formula, despite our many attempts to seek a fairer distribution of costs."
Today: The Island Climate Action Network invites you to a Zoom talk on Climate Change Resilience with Matthijs Bouw. He’ll tell us how addressing the issue benefits everyone. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

Monday Night at the Movies at the M.V. Playhouse presents one of my all-time favorites — "A Raisin in the Sun" with Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee. There are other versions but this one is the best, according to me. $5. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Pick up all the supplies you need to create Homemade Valentines with the kids. Or maybe for big kids. Edgartown library. 10 am to 6 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?

Sometimes in the middle of the doldrums of winter, we like to have a big salad and top it with a dressing that has some substance. This recipe from IGI, made from yogurt, mayo, and a blend of dill, basil, and mint, checks all the boxes.

CONTEST ANSWER
Friday’s correct answer: Johnny Hoy singing and Barbara Hoy playing bass.

Orange you going to grow citrus?
Abigail Higgins, our Garden Notes columnist, writes about growing citrus indoors. This time of year, the potted plants have begun to emerge from their slumber. "The scent of orange blossom is the soothing antidote to winter and cabin fever!" she writes. "My collection shares the habit of flowering profusely in nubby bunches of rounded buds close to the stem." You can read more here.
