Anti-vaxx case moved
The 11 employees suing the Steamship Authority over the vaccine mandate will have to make their case in U.S. District Court. The SSA filed a motion to have the case moved based on jurisdictional issues. Since the SSA employees allege the mandate violates First Amendment rights to practice their religion, the case belongs in federal court. Meanwhile, the lawsuit provides a new window into those allegations through signed affidavits from the employees who filed for religious exemptions but had them rejected. Reporter Brian Dowd has this story.
At a board meeting on Tuesday, the SSA discussed an emergency drydock of the ferry Katama after a crack was discovered in the vessel’s hull. That led to a discussion about the possibility of converting some of the fleet to electric or hybrid ferries. Meanwhile, the board put a discussion on proposed legislation that would affect their terms on hold. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the details.
On alert
Parents received a notice from schools superintendent Matt D’Andrea informing them about a threat made by a middle school student on social media. The Times learned that the threat involved an Oak Bluffs student, but the police department declined to provide any information citing privacy laws surrounding juveniles. Reporter Lucas Thors has this story.

Quote of the Day
"Honestly, a person would have to be mad to destroy this." –Katherine Scott in a letter to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission about a proposal to demolish a house at Indian Hill

Hot Topic Comment
Bow Van Riper commented on the passing of Jack Shea. "A newspaperman of the old school, he took stories that others might have dismissed as ‘small’ or ‘insignificant’ and — through his meticulous reporting and vivid writing — showed readers that they were anything but. Rest well, Jack . . . you will be missed."

Hot Topic Letter
Ann Lees wrote about the loss of Jack Shea, who reviewed her book of poems. "I still have a copy of the MV Times with his review and had high hopes that if and when I publish another book of poems, I would be lucky enough to have him review it. Sadly, that can’t happen now. May he rest in peace."
Today: The M.V. Library Association invites us to read the classics, in this case Tolstoy’s "War and Peace." A lively discussion takes place tonight. Russian writers are some of my favorite writers, along with JD Salinger and John Kennedy Toole. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

The Edgartown library connects the dots with Judy Palken’s Food and Mood presentation. Why does that bowl/vat of mac ‘n cheese make us feel like we’re back home? Why do I anticipate my chocolate ice cream at the end of the day? Why, oh, why. 7 pm. –C.B
.
Tomorrow: I hope that the Wednesday Walk the Chop group bundles up tomorrow, or maybe the temperature will be 20 degrees warmer than today. Who knows these days. Meet at the Vineyard Haven library at 3 pm to start out. –C.B.

Don’t tank it

Celebrating the Wampanoag
A new online exhibit available at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian honoring the Wampanoag Tribe features videos made by a number of members of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). Aquinnah Tribal Chairwoman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais shares a bit of Wampanoag history, tribe member Linda Coombs of the Aquinnah Cultural Center speaks on the significance of wampum belt making, and much more. It’s all in an effort to honor and celebrate the ancient culture of the Wampanoag, and to support revitalization initiatives happening today. Read reporter Lucas Thors’ story here.
