Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is National Hot Chocolate Day. Seems like the perfect thing on this cold, cold final day of January. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Flurry of activity
We hope you all weathered the weekend storm as best as possible. Our own Shelby Scott, aka Rich Saltzberg, was out and about for a lot of it on Saturday, keeping us updated on the conditions. He has a wrap-up of the storm today, along with photos from Jeremy Driesen of people enjoying the snow on Sunday. Meanwhile, reporter Eunki Seonwoo got to see firsthand what it’s like to be a plow operator during a blizzard (from the passenger seat.) His story is here.
Positive COVID trend
We report to you when COVID spikes or surges, but the news we really like to bring is when the virus plummets. That’s what happened last week on the Island. The number of positive tests dropped to 133 cases, a 73 percent decrease from the first week of January. Let’s hope that trend continues into February. Reporter Brian Dowd has the update.
Seas the moment
There are three Vineyarders learning the ropes about maritime jobs onboard the TS Kennedy from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The three students  —  freshman Caleb Burt, sophomore Taylor Trudel, and junior Jacob Maccaferri — talk about the opportunities they believe an MMA education is providing for them. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo spoke to all three by phone after they stopped in port in South Carolina. You can read the story here.
MEETINGS
The Chilmark select board meets at 5 pm Tuesday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"I feel like we are alone. Like we have no way to fix this."–Jose Abreu on an immigration issue that has split his family between Brazil and the United States

Hot Topic Comment
Sally Grant commented on the ongoing debate over a synthetic turf field proposed for the high school. "And the manipulation continues. Why suggest a mediator? Let the process play out without interference in this manner. If it fails the permitting process without the back door dealings, then it will go back to MVC for another hearing with a total of three fields. Or has nobody been paying attention?"

Hot Topic Letter
Robert Kendall wrote to share his excitement about a proposed expansion for Island Grown Initiative. "Of all the development proposals the MVC has received since its
inception none is as exciting and extraordinary as the IGI master plan."

Today: The IGI Mobile Market is stocked and ready to provide you with Fresh, Locally Grown Produce and Eggs at the Oak Bluffs library. Beats the heck out of the mystery meat sandwich I had for lunch today. I’m asking George Brennan to let me out early for this. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

The Vineyard Haven library brings us Dining with Diabetes, a helpful way to learn how to plan meals around keeping your blood sugar in check. The older I get, the more I talk about health with my siblings. We used to talk about nights out, now we talk about our "numbers." 6:30 pm.
–C.B.

Tomorrow: The Peer Recovery Support Center offers Yoga in Recovery at the Red House. I’m pretty sure there’s not much that won’t improve when you practice yoga. I don’t know this from personal experience, however. 10:30 am. –C.B.

Movies! Check out what’s playing this weekend at Island theaters here.

Staying in?

While searching through our archives for recipes to keep us warm, we stumbled upon this IGI Harvest of the Month recipe for Boston Baked Beans. The beans take time to prepare, but it’s not the least bit difficult to pull off. We’d like to try this in the Times kitchen on a snowy day, maybe with one of George Brennan’s popovers.

Wing it or not?
"Longtime readers know my ambivalence about the practice of feeding wild birds," writes Wild Side columnist Matt Pelikan. "By concentrating birds around an unnaturally rich food supply in a human-modified setting, birdfeeding alters bird behavior, elevates risk of disease, exposes birds to increased chances of bashing their heads on windows, and creates target-rich environments for house cats and hawks. Bird feeders also support rats, which nobody wants but which, whether you choose to think about it or not, are pretty much ubiquitous in settled portions of the Vineyard." You can read more here.
