Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 2004, the New England Patriots won their third Super Bowl in four years with a young quarterback named Tom Brady. Today he "officially" retired from playing. In 2019, editor George Brennan tried to put Brady’s contributions into perspective. Today is also National Freedom Day, which celebrates freedom from slavery and commemorates the day President Abraham Lincoln signed a joint resolution between the House and Senate that would become the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

No more for Nomans
The U.S. Navy has decided it will do no further cleanup of unexploded ordnances from Nomans Land, the tiny Island just three miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. The Navy had contemplated three choices and picked the one that does no further cleanup, but instead provides signage and monitoring to warn the public of the potential dangers that lurk beneath the surface. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.

Creating a roadmap
The Edgartown master plan project is scheduled for a busy month in February. Later this month the town’s consultant will be holding a series of forums aimed at getting feedback from the public on what will become the town’s roadmap for the future. Reporter Brian Dowd has this update.

Schooner or later
The Tangier is back floating after spending a couple of days grounded in Vineyard Haven Harbor near the Shell station. In a rescue operation on Tuesday that featured helping hands from Ralph Packer’s tugboat, the vessel owned by Carlton Sprague was dewatered and righted. It was then floated over to Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard where its hull was inspected before it was returned to its mooring. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story.
MEETINGS

Quote of the Day
"We tried to flip it last night, 10-11 o’clock — we didn’t make it."–Carlton Sprague, owner of the Tangier, a schooner that broke away from its mooring and grounded in Vineyard Haven Harbor

Hot Topic Comment
Jim Donovan commented on our editorial looking for new blood and fresh ideas for boards and committees on the Island. "Where are all the 30 and 40 year olds? They’re leaving the Island because it’s getting close to impossible to raise a family here. As for older Island residents not stepping up, could it be that a large amount of Islanders who have been on the Island for more than 20 years know the MVC has outgrown its usefulness?"

Hot Topic Letter
Elaine Miller wrote about the need for collaboration among the towns for the good of students. "What point am I making? The individuality of our towns is valuable and respected, but this is not the time to take an independent stand. Collaboration is the word on not just this issue but many more to come. Please join as one to get our high school funding in place and please sit down in a room together and not come out until the high school budget formula is resolved. We are Islanders. We can do it!"
Today: Time to try something new, and our libraries are here to help. Heather Capece leads Watercolor for Teens and Adults, for ages 13 and up, via Zoom and the West Tisbury library. I do fall into that age group. And I have no teenagers at home to critique my work. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

Partial to poetry? Pathways offers its
Tuesday Open Floor Poetry and Writing Series with Ron Slate and guest writers. These are supportive folk, so come to listen or read new work. There is a Zoom link (what did we do before Zoom?) or you can visit the Pathways website to join. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: I have an affinity for all things Russian, including writers. It’s been years since I’ve tackled "War and Peace," and February on an Island sounds like the right time and place. Join the Classic Book Group as they discuss the great Tolstoy novel. 5 pm. –C.B.

Movies! Check out what’s playing this weekend at Island theaters here.

Accessible art
Martha ("Sunny") Kent-Holmes of Bad Apple MV started selling her jewelry designs from a picnic table outside a bar while living in Vieques, Puerto Rico. She pulls inspiration from many different influences in her life, and has never been one to limit herself to a single medium of expression. In her recent piece on Kent-Holmes' endeavors, writer Gwyn McAllister illustrates how pretty much every aspect of the artist’s life is represented in one form or another, whether it’s guitar pick earrings or colorful wool hats.
