Vowing to rebuild
One day after a fire destroyed his restaurant in Oak Bluffs, Ocean View owner Mike Santoro tells The Times he is working with the landlord on plans to rebuild. Meanwhile, Santoro says he will meet with staff next week and find ways to keep them employed at his other Island restaurants. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the update. Also, there is new information from fire officials in Rich’s story from yesterday. You can read that here.
Look at them grow
Island Grown Initiative has been granted approval for an expansion of their Tisbury farm by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. At a meeting Thursday night, the commission approved the plans, which calls for a one-story, 3,200-square-foot education and innovation center for offices and educational spaces, three seasonal yurts 16 feet in diameter each, and two new employee housing buildings. Reporter Brian Dowd (filing his last story as a staff member of The Times) has the details.

Beautiful get
The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission has scooped up another beautiful spot to conserve. This time the commission has spent $8 million to purchase 21 acres known as Quenomica Point in Edgartown, which is on Edgartown Great Pond. The property was owned previously by John O’Keefe and has been eyed for years by the Land Bank as a prized piece of land to conserve. Editor George Brennan has this story.

Quote of the Day
"We have empowered and trained officers to make tactical and operational decisions. The radio traffic I can hear it appears sound decisions were made. I’m very proud of those men and women right now."–Oak Bluffs Fire Chief Nelson Wirtz on a fire that destroyed the Ocean View Restaurant Thursday while he and other Island chiefs were away at a conference

Hot Topic Comment
Deborah Lorino commented on the Ocean View fire. "Watching this was like my house catching fire. Made me sad."

Hot Topic Letter
Walter Kennedy is not pleased with running into a box spring and bureau in the middle of Barnes Road recently. "Where were you going under the cover of darkness with that junk that was not properly tied down? In case you’re interested, my car is going to Angel’s Auto and Budget just brought me a rental car — not to mention the fact that I almost had a heart attack when I slammed full tilt into your useless crap."
Today: I haven’t seen the new "West Side Story," the classic about two rival gangs and young love. It explores ethnic issues as well. I’m putting this on my list of films I want to see. Film Center. 7:30 pm. –Connie Berry

I wanted to let you know that a friend of the Times, photographer Ed Grazda, has an opening this weekend in Boston for his work "Asia: A Photographer’s Notebook 1980-1997". Here’s a story about Ed’s work by the late great Jack Shea. –C.B.
This weekend: You really should take the family to the M.V. Museum this weekend while they’re still offering 50 percent off admission. There are new exhibits and there’s a scavenger hunt for families. 10 am to 4 pm. My friend Pat Waring tells me that her granddaughter Hazel loves the Virtual Children’s Art Classes for ages 7 to 10 on Saturdays via the West Tisbury library. I bet Pat’s place is filled with some bright and beautiful creations by Hazel. 4 pm. Poetry Drop In with Donald Nitchie happens via the Chilmark library. Email Tracy Thorpe to sign up. 4:30 pm. Oak Bluffs library wiz Carolina Cooney hosts Cooking with Carolina on Facebook. I think this is a brilliant idea, with a new recipe every week. 5 pm.

On Sunday, pick up a Craft Bag for Kids, Teens, or Adults at the Vineyard Haven library. 10 am to noon. The Unitarian Universalist Society of M.V. offers us a talk on "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune." Sometimes we compound our suffering by the way we respond to it, our own worst enemies sometimes I suppose. 11 am. Join the Land Bank staff on a guided walk of Poucha Pond Reservation on Chappaquiddick. Meet at the trailhead for the reservation off Wasque Road. The walk happens rain or shine. 1 to 3 pm. Don’t forget the M.V. Poetry Contest is going on. It’s open to students in middle school, high school, and adults. This is a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on the brilliant writers we have on the Island. Anytime. I don’t know about you but I’m relishing sunshine these days. If the sun is shining this weekend, I’m going to put my face out there. See you around. –C.B.

Staying in?
We realize that mushrooms like cool, damp weather and we know we’ve had our share of that lately. So, let’s try this recipe for Oyster Mushrooms in Seasoned Flour. You can fry them up and they taste just like chicken. Or at least they work in a vegan recipe like chicken.

Hidden Heroines
"Her Hidden Genius" by Marie Benedict is a captivating story about an unsung heroine, Rosalind Franklin, who discovered the remarkable double-helix structure of DNA. Benedict describes how Franklin’s research was secretly used, without permission, by three now-famous scientists — Francis Crick, James Watson, and Maurice Wilkins — to win them the Nobel Prize. Check out Abby Remer’s recent piece on the book, and pick it up at Edgartown Books or online.
