Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1998, the U.S. Olympic Women’s Hockey Team won their first Olympic gold medal. The team included Colleen Coyne, a player from Falmouth. Today is also National Random Acts of Kindness Day. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
Tisbury’s decision to put a hold on appointing someone to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission paid off with five candidates to choose from. In the end, the select board chose Greg Martino, but told the other candidates they’d like them to apply for or run for other positions in town. Also, the board heard an optimistic report from town administrator Jay Grande about the Beach Road project. Reporter Rich
Saltzberg has this story.
In the driver’s seat The House approved a bill on Wednesday that would allow undocumented immigrants to get a driver’s license. Proponents say it’s a way to improve safety, while opponents say it rewards people who enter the country
illegally. Both Island legislators — Rep. Dylan Fernandes and Sen. Julian Cyr — support the bill. The State House News Service with an assist from editor George Brennan have this story.
Strange fire As if we needed more proof of the sun’s power, a West Tisbury homeowner has a story to tell. Firefighters believe that a mirror hanging in an outdoor shower is likely to blame for a smoldering fire he discovered in the home’s siding. No one was injured and a few shingles were scorched. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this
story.
MEETINGS No meetings on Friday.

Quote of the Day "The Martha’s Vineyard Commission and almost 100 local residents are working on the climate action plan for the Island. We’ve developed goals and we’re working on objectives and we’re moving forward. And one thing we’d really like to do in all the towns is to have a workshop with some of the staff and board members to update them on what we’re doing and to talk to them about their priorities so those can be included and incorporated into the
plan."–Martha’s Vineyard Commission climate change planner Liz Durkee speaking to the Chilmark select board
Hot Topic Comment Folks continue to react to the passing of Times contributor Jack Shea. This from Charlie Utz: "A great voice has been silenced. Jack was a great man and a great writer. He will be missed around here. RIP, brother."
Hot Topic Letter Don Keller, one of our regular commenters, wrote to point out some great palindromes coming up. "If you start on 2/20/22 you notice that it is a
‘palindrome date.’ That is, the numbers read the same backwards and forwards. If you continue from there, the next 8 days are also 5 digit palindromes — 2/21/22, 2/22/22, etc. for 8 days, ending with 2/28/22. BUT WAIT!"

Remember when Jenna Lambert made Apple Bourbon Cake and didn’t bring any into work? We remember that
too. Judging by this delish recipe, she probably didn’t have any leftovers. That’s why we’re making our own tonight.
