Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is National Umbrella Day. Hopefully we won’t need one, but if we do there’s always Rainy Day on Main Street in Vineyard Haven. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Couple of resignations
Meegan Lancaster has resigned as the Oak Bluffs health agent and her husband, MacGregor Anderson, has resigned as assessor. The two resignations are unrelated. Lancaster, who has been at the center of the synthetic turf battle, wouldn’t comment. Anderson says he’s just taken a new job in West Tisbury. Reporter Brian Dowd has this story.
Voices of Recovery
In today’s print edition and online, we have our latest series of oral histories — this time from the recovery community. Our reporters spoke to recovery coaches and those who are in recovery from drugs and alcohol. You’ll read the stories of Tyler Paulson, Trip Barnes, Tim Wolff, Chip Coblyn, Nicole Jackson, Howie Marlin, Adam Gendreau, as well as Dr. Charles Silberstein and Laura Roosevelt. .

Crying Uncas
Robert Sawyer had a vision. He saw a building adjacent to his family’s Barn, Bowl & Bistro as a possible location for workforce housing. But he faced an uphill battle. The property in question falls under the jurisdiction of three historic commissions in Oak Bluffs, which Sawyer called "triple jeopardy" in an email withdrawing an application to demolish the building. Editor George Brennan spoke to both sides and has the story.
MEETINGS
There are no meetings scheduled for Friday.

Walk to Downtown Edgartown Sponsored

This rare 1.92 acre lot is within walking distance to downtown Edgartown and tucked away on the end of a private drive. The existing expansive home offers views over the Sound from the third floor and beautiful vistas and meadow views from the main level. Bring your imagination or architect to redesign the existing 6,000+ square foot home or start fresh and build the family compound of your dreams.
Quote of the Day
"He was just wonderful, he was a musician, he was a carpenter, he was a chef, he had an enormous personality. He was a larger than life figure," Walsh said.–Rebecca Walsh on the loss of her uncle, Albert Hutchinson, who died from COVID-19

Hot Topic Comment
James Kligensmith commented on our story about the Tisbury Police Department getting permission to purge records. "After reading this article and having been a Tisbury Police Officer in the early 80s I have one question: Do they still have computers at the Tisbury Police Department? As a Licensed Private Investigator for 25+ years I still have all my records, on CDs, etc. It is amazing how little space they take up and how easy and quick it is to pull up reports, court records, etc."

Hot Topic Letter
Lynne Fraker wrote to comment on the Town of Tisbury’s lack of progress on a pier project at Owen Park. "Projects in other Island towns have been completed with the help and guidance of consultants who present modern designs, permit, build, oversee, and secure grants adding up to millions of dollars to make these projects possible. Then there is Tisbury and the failing Owen Park Pier where for years, funding has been used to patch it."
Today: Wake up with aches and pains? I hear you. Try Community Kaiut Yoga class in-person or online. Ease some of those achy-breaky joints with yoga for all levels. (I did see Billy Ray Cyrus perform at the Stanley Theater in Utica, N.Y., many years ago. He seemed very nice.) 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

I have decided to carve out some of my binge-watching time to learn something new. It’s either going to be playing the ukulele or guitar. Old dog, new tricks and all that. Anywho, it’s Uke Jam Night at the YMCA. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: One of the things I like about Pathways is that you can either go to the Chilmark Tavern in person or view their events online. I like flexibility. Check out an Art Exhibit featuring Wendy Weldon and Rob Hauck from 11 am to 5 pm. –C.B.

The best part of today’s recipe is that you're actually getting a few recipes, all of them featuring The Mighty Winter Squash. Tina Miller shares some of her favorites in this Edible Vineyard story. We like the Roasted Butternut Squash and Brussels Sprouts Salad with Cranberries, Pepitas and Arugula.

Binge-worthy mess
We’ve been sharing with you some of the things we like to binge on television. Last week we brought you the delightful "After Life," so it’s only right that we share the antithesis of that show — "Succession." Good luck trying to find a character to root for on this show. Logan Roy will have you thinking Donald Trump meets Rupert Murdoch. Not exactly a delightful combo. You can read Editor George Brennan’s take here. Spoiler alert: He hated to like it.
We sent you The Minute because you gave us your email address at an Islanders Write or Islanders Read the Classics event (or at the Ag Fair), or you responded to an ad for The Minute and signed up on our website. The Minute will arrive Monday through Friday by the end of the workday, and features the day's news, important meetings and events, and even what to make for supper, along with some newsletter-only coupons and insider tips. We may produce special weekend editions and occasionally send you special offers from select advertisers. Got this forwarded from a friend? Sign up for yourself here. See past newsletters here.
