Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day two years ago, Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash. Today is National Spouses Day. Pro tip: Don’t celebrate it with National Peanut Brittle Day. It’s also National Book Shelfie Day, a day for book lovers to share a photo of their beloved book shelves. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Imagine you’re trying to do the right thing by going back to Brazil to settle immigration issues and suddenly your family is ripped apart. That’s what is going on right now with Jose and Jennifer Abreu. One of the couple’s children is stuck in Brazil, while Jennifer is back in the United States with their other kids. Reporter Brian Dowd has this story.
Going in, superintendent Matt D’Andrea had to know that Oak Bluffs would be a wild card and sure enough they are. While three towns have agreed to sign a letter of support for a high school construction project with the Massachusetts School Building Authority, Oak Bluffs select board wants to send a letter of their own. Reporter Brian Dowd has this update.
Field tested
The debate over PFAS and the proposed synthetic track and field at MVRHS continues. The Oak Bluffs board of health is considering draft regulations that would ban fields that contain the contaminant, but the field’s architect argued on Tuesday that PFAS used in the manufacturing process is inert. No decisions were made, but one O.B. official suggested the field be installed and removed at a later date if necessary. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the latest in the ongoing saga.
MEETINGS
No meetings scheduled for Thursday.

Quote of the Day
"They asked that because they recognize that we have a need at our high school for a building project, however they are concerned about the disagreement that has been expressed from some of the towns about the funding formula that we use to fund the high school."–MVRHS superintendent Matt D’Andrea seeking support from towns for the school district’s application for funding from the Massachusetts School Building Authority

Hot Topic Comment
Mike Ack commented on the story about a woman having her license to carry suspended because she lost a firearm. "Claimed ‘her life is busy’? My life is busy. Everyone’s life is busy. What if I didn’t report my positive covid test to the Board of Health and my employer because my life is ‘busy.’ A feeble attempt at an excuse and more proof this person is not showing an ability to act responsibility with regards to a firearm."

Hot Topic Letter
Members of the Island’s faith community joined in solidarity to support a synagogue in Fort Worth, Texas, where a gunman took hostages earlier this month. "This was a violent act of anti-semitism that has caused grief, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress not only for those immediately involved, and the members of their congregations, but for all of our Jewish brothers and sisters, wherever they are.  We stand in solidarity and sympathy with all the children of God, and especially with our Jewish friends here on the Island, and everywhere, who must suffer each time something like this happens."
Today: You don’t have to tell me twice to do this one: Online: Resolve to Eat More Fish. This presentation talks about the joys and good reasoning behind including fish in your diet. One of the perks of living on an Island. 7 pm. –Connie Berry

Philip Weinstein presents the "Uncanny Voyages" seminar that centers on writers who explore extreme situations. I wonder if that means in their personal lives? Readings from Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, Freud, Kafka, Faulkner, and Flannery O’Connor. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Here’s a sweet one: Arboretum Tour for Polly Hill’s Birthday. Celebrate her memory by taking a tour of PHA. (Her birthday is Sunday, but what the heck, let’s party early.) 10 am. –C.B.

Staying in?

You can get salad greens anyplace this time of year, and IGI reminds us that we can pretty much pull any salad together with mixed greens and our favorite veggies. Try this recipe for Pea Shoot, Pea, Watercress, and Arugula Salad. It has a light lemony dressing we really like.

Playing through the pandemic
Many musicians on Martha’s Vineyard make money from a myriad of jobs and have been able to weather the financial storm created by COVID. But bars and clubs being forced to close their doors, and event calendars collapsing for most establishments, has made paying bills and keeping food on the table tough for some performing artists who rely more heavily on income from live shows. The New England Musician’s Relief Fund wants all musicians to know there is support available for those who are struggling, and they’re currently reviewing applications for financial support. Reporter Lucas Thors has the story that also touches on the current state of the Island music scene.
