Is landscaping considered agricultural? That’s the crux of an issue between a group of neighbors and a property owned by Peter Goodale. The Oak Bluffs zoning board of appeals continued the hearing last week. The dispute stretches back several months and stems from neighbor complaints about noise and activity on the property. Rich Saltzberg was at the hearing and has the story.

Quote of the Day "I know that hearts are broken all over the Island and all over Chilmark…our lighthouse and our mooring and our rock." — Debbie Packer on the death of Everett Poole. Hot Topic Comment Commenter Dean
Charettee was happy to hear of the Island schools suspended mask policies: "Finally free. Finally free. Thank God Almighty." Hot Topic Letter Katherine Scott is concerned about offshore wind terminals and
their potential impact on Lagoon Pond: "The Lagoon Pond estuary is a precious asset, with clearly established value to two towns and as an element in the ecology of Vineyard Haven Outer Harbor and Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds. Preserving and improving its water quality is a higher priority than allowing an industrial expansion of dubious value to the town, one that may well degrade the functioning of the estuary system, and might also restrict opportunities for future improvements to the tidal flow in and out of the west arm of the Lagoon. Plenty of sea ducks (eider ducks, buffleheads, mergansers, long-tailed ducks, and others) and loons hunt for prey in the incoming and outflowing tide at the bridge. Perhaps in the future, tides flowing through culverts would also provide prey for shore
birds."

Tomorrow: The Trustees give their State of the Coast Report via the Vineyard Haven library. Here’s a bit: By 2050, more than 3,500 structures on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket may be impacted by storm flooding, and nearly 800 structures lost to erosion, according to The Trustees’ report. 12 pm. –C.B.

MV on ice The Martha’s Vineyard Figure Skating Club is a major Island institution — It’s been around since 1981, and has
welcomed thousands of talented skaters over the years, including some national competitors. The club provides opportunities for kids to learn the fundamentals of skating, and supports them as far as they want to go in the sport. For some, there are dreams of competing in the Olympics, and for others, it’s just a great way to have fun, challenge themselves, and get some exercise. Reporter Lucas Thors has the story on why the club is so important to the Vineyard community.
