Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1968, the first 911 call was placed. Today is National Almond Day and National Do a Grouch a Favor Day. An interesting combination. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
Chilmark became the latest town to approve putting a non-binding question on the spring election ballot
concerning a plan by the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station to dump radioactive water into Cape Cod Bay. The proposal has raised red flags because of the potential hazards it may cause. The Chilmark select board also received an update on the Island’s climate change task force. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the details. Ditto, Aquinnah. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story.
Storm’s a brewin’ It won’t be like the blizzard a couple weeks ago, but there is a high wind watch in effect for Martha’s Vineyard. The National Weather Service is predicting winds of 25 to 35 mph, but gusts as high as 60 mph. As a result the Steamship Authority has issued an alert that there may be trip cancellations on Friday morning. Plan your travel accordingly.
ICYMI: Land dispute Neighbors of land owned by Peter Goodale in Oak Bluffs have raised concerns about what they say is commercial activity taking place on the property. The dispute is headed for a showdown before the Oak Bluffs zoning board of appeals on Thursday night. Goodale is asking that a business be allowed to continue operating under an agricultural exemption, but neighbors say the business doesn’t fit the definition. Reporter Brian Dowd has that preview.

Quote of the Day "I can say that the safety of our students and staff is the most important part of what we do. I do not believe that this is a credible threat, but we take all threats very seriously."–MVRHS superintendent Matt D’Andrea on a threat that was made by a middle school student via social media
Hot Topic Letter Ann Rosenkranz wrote to urge town meeting voters to support a non-binding referendum aimed at plans by Holtec, the owner of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant, to dump millions of gallons of irradiated water into Cape Cod Bay. "Holtec has alternative ways of disposing of the radioactive water, but dumping it into the bay is their most efficient, expedient, and cheapest solution. The company has signed an agreement that none of this water will be released into the bay in 2022. The water is currently being tested to discover what it contains and in what amounts. The presence of tritium in the water is already established. Tritium is a radioactive element that is permanent and bioaccumulative. Physicians for Social
Responsibility, firmly against the release of any of this water, assert that there is no safe dose of radiation."
