West Tisbury hires John Rose
Former Oak Bluffs fire chief John Rose is now working at the West Tisbury fire department. Rose left the top position in Oak Bluffs in 2020 under a cloud of controversy surrounding sexual harassment claims and ambulance billing practices. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the story here.
Malkin suggests new formula
The Chilmark select board proposed a solution to the funding formula debate surrounding the Island’s regional high school. Select board chair Jim Malkin suggested the three down-Island towns support the lion’s share of funding while the three up-Island downs split the remainder. Reporter Rich Saltzberg was at the meeting to hear the numbers break down.

High school votes masks off
Following suit with other Island public schools, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School voted to suspend their mask policy commensurate with the Island boards of health. Reporter Lucas Thors has the details.
MEETINGS

Quote of the Day
"He can be a valuable asset to the town of West Tisbury as a firefighter." — West Tisbury Fire Chief Greg Pachico on the hiring of John Rose

Hot Topic Comment
Commenter Frank Brunelle offered a solution to Tisbury’s snowy sidewalk bylaw: "When I owned a building on Circuit Ave. in Oak Bluffs I always shoveled the snow there early in the morning of the storm but at the same time Oak Bluffs did a terrific job – in those days – and was right there. In Vineyard Haven it is different. Shall we say. In the 80’s a private citizen – Geno Montessi – as part of the Tisbury Business Association – donated a snowblower to the town. It worked for a couple of years. But consider this – where is the snow supposed to go? Can you shovel it into the roads? On Beach Road for example, plows push the snow onto the sidewalk. This contaminates it with sale, ice, and guarantees a tremendous amount of work and then where to put it but on the sidewalk in piles. It is properly the job of the town to do. Now honestly, this is not Vermont – we do not get a lot of snow. Proper equipment and some overtime pay and designate the job either to the town or an outside contractor and do it properly."

Hot Topic Letter
Nicole Brisson is concerned about some of the development on the Island: "Who is keeping tabs on how this expansion will affect our Island infrastructure? How will the Island possibly be able to handle all of this extra water usage, electrical demand, and wastewater need, let alone the additional cars and people? Main Street in Edgartown, as an example, has been overburdened by traffic, with the asphalt buckling and making the pavement so uneven that most all of us have surely caught our foot once or twice while crossing the street. Many of our roads are already in poor condition and how will they hold up to the increased traffic?"
Today: My dad framed a color marker representation of a deer in the woods I drew when I was 12. It stayed on the wall for decades. God bless him. Anyway, Val Estabrook leads Virtual Children’s Art Class for ages 11 to 14. West Tisbury library. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

On Sunday, Jim Thomas presents a talk at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Vineyard Haven. Something tells me we should listen. It’s available via Zoom. 11 am. I think it’s worth seeing if you can still sign up. West Tisbury library 1 to 3 pm. Public Skating at the M.V. Ice Arena, open to all ages and abilities, happens at 2:50 pm. Real Estate Confidential: Remedy for a cold and rainy day Sponsored

Real Estate Confidential is a biweekly chit-chat about new listings, sales, or other insider info on the Martha’s Vineyard real estate market, by Fred Roven, Martha’s Vineyard Buyer Agents. It appears each Friday in The Minute.

So, regardless of what you might be told up to and including "it never snows" on Martha’s Vineyard, the weather has a cold, ugly, rainy day in store today. The best property descriptions I can think of today include waterfront, beachfront, oceanfront, pond front, waterviews, distant water views….well, you get the concept. Wherever you are, just give it a try — check out the photos, check out the views, and read the descriptions. Let me know how the remedy works for you, and it's probably best to ignore the price tag.

Many things have changed over the past couple of years, and real estate is no exception. One impact is an increased desire to own more than one home. With the rise in remote work, more people are reconsidering where they want to live and buying second homes to give them greater flexibility. In addition to work-from-home opportunities, the benefits of a second home include enjoying a change in scenery, building your wealth faster, being closer to loved ones, and locking in your expenses for retirement.

Even with the limited inventory in some price ranges, there are numerous opportunities for waterfront living on the Vineyard. Beginning with a cottage on Lake Tashmoo at a pleasing price, an oceanfront paradise on the Wequobsque cliffs on Chilmark’s coveted South Shore, to a rare waterfront opportunity in Seven Gates Farm and Swordspoint, one of the Island's most spectacular waterfront properties.

If you want to be on the waterfront and have a private dock with water and power, mooring in a safe harbor, and access to open ocean, 242 Herring Creek Road is the place to be. The house sits on over four acres of Lake Tashmoo waterfront. You can take the beautiful stroll to your dock or take the mile walk on the newly created path to the Tashmoo Town Beach, Wilfred’s Pond for beach walks, or nearby Mink Meadows Golf Course. This property is about a 5-minute drive or 10-minute bike to downtown Vineyard Haven the SSA, restaurants, and shopping. A boater's paradise with superb potential . . .

Islanders Write returns
After COVID knocked out any possibility of public gatherings (and most other fun events) in 2019, The Times was forced to cancel the annual Islanders Write event at Featherstone Center for the Arts that brings writers, readers, and industry professionals with Vineyard ties together to discuss all things writing. Now, the beloved community event is back on the calendar for Sunday, July 31, and Monday, August 1. Read Kate Feiffer’s story on the long-awaited return of the event.

We sent you The Minute because you gave us your email address at an Islanders Write or Islanders Read the Classics event (or at the Ag Fair), or you responded to an ad for The Minute and signed up on our website.
