Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded after liftoff above Cape Canaveral — a truly horrific day in U.S. history. Today is National Fun At Work Day. We’re always having fun here at The Times. It’s also National Kazoo Day, which is not how we have fun. Stay safe this weekend and if you get out and have photos to share, send them to photos@mvtimes.com. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Ready or not
This would be a great time for the forecasters to be wrong. Overnight Thursday into Friday, the National Weather Service upgraded our winter storm watch into a blizzard warning. The snow predictions haven’t changed much in the past 12 hours. We’re about to get dumped on. You can tell people are taking this seriously by the lines at the supermarket, the gas stations, and, yes, the liquor stores. Here’s that story. Meanwhile, the cancellations are coming in fast and furiously. The ferries will also be out of service tomorrow. Hope you have a good book and a fine chianti for your weekend.

Beach weather
Blizzard? Nah, the Tisbury select board is thinkin summer. At a meeting this week, the board agreed to three more years of Beach Road Weekend — the summer festival that brings musicians to the Island. Adam Epstein, the concert promoter, said he hopes to begin earning enough to provide more to local organizations, as well as the town. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the details.

Ripped apart
The family at the center of an immigration issue we first brought to your attention earlier this week is speaking out about what they went through to go through the process of getting a green card. In the process, the Abreu family was split apart in Brazil — the mom, Jennifer, coming back to the Island and her husband, Jose, stuck in Brazil with one of their children. The family says they feel alone and they’re calling on federal representatives to help reunite them. Reporter Brian Dowd has this story.
MEETINGS
The Edgartown select board meets at 4 pm Monday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"I think it’s really critical that we come together as a community across the Island to put forward a project that can make our high school facilities as good as the interior of the school and the educational programming. I realize that there’s a lot of discussion about how to pay for that, and as we know from our experience in Tisbury, that is all part of the feasibility study, and so I would urge the select board to sign onto this letter and know that we in good faith can work together to support a project that is in the best interests of our entire community."–MVRHS school committee member Amy Houghton requesting support from Tisbury select board members for a letter to the MSBA

Hot Topic Comment
Dana Nunes commented on a story about a couple that’s been torn apart by immigration issues. "Can you tell us about the other ways that those of us who wish to, can help this woman make ends meet? It sounds like she needs a hand up."

Hot Topic Letter
Alicia Knight wrote to show appreciation for Vineyard Complementary Medicine for offering acupuncture to teachers. "This is a trying time for all and your gesture speaks volumes to your recognition and appreciation of the work we do, especially now."
Today: You might as well enjoy a movie tonight, right? Who knows how long it will take to dig ourselves out of this weekend’s forecast. I say go for it. "Parallel Mothers" with Penélope Cruz is playing at the M.V. Film Center. You can read Brooks Robards’ review here. 7:30 pm. –Connie Berry
How about a nice walk through a Sheriff’s Meadow property before it’s covered in white stuff? It’s always a good idea to get out in nature. Good stress reliever. Just ask my family. Anytime. –C.B.

The Ice Arena hosts a Public Ice Skating Session in the afternoon. Bring your own skates or rent a pair at the rink.  2:50 to 3:50 pm. Real Estate Confidential: It must be condominium season Sponsored

Real Estate Confidential is a weekly chit chat about new listings, sales, or other insider info on the Martha’s Vineyard real estate market, by Fred Roven, Martha’s Vineyard Buyer Agents. It appears each Friday in The Minute.

This must be condominium season. There have been multiple new listings of small investment-type condominiums and condo hotels. All the condominiums on the market right now I used to consider purely for investment. How times have changed. In order to secure a spot on Martha’s Vineyard, many buyers are opting for a small condominium that can be used for multiple weeks by the owner (investor) without huge investor penalties. There are certainly rumblings that this scenario that certainly favors the investor/owner might change to provide additional profit to the management groups, and so it should.

There are currently six such units available in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs. All conveniently located to town centers and with plenty of options close by, including beaches, restaurants, and entertainment. One of the primary reasons for owning a unit in a condo hotel is the opportunity to enjoy summer vacations on Martha’s Vineyard, plus an onsite management group to handle all your tenant needs when you are not on the Island.

The Island Inn is a five-acre property on the northeastern shores of Martha's Vineyard, just one mile south of downtown Oak Bluffs. Here on the edge of the Farm Neck Golf Club, you can follow Beach Rd. half a mile south to reach Joseph Sylvia State Beach, and wander one mile up Seaview Ave. to sunbathe at Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs. Edgartown Commons is located a short walk from Edgartown’s waterfront, shops, and restaurants, and is the perfect hotel for your Martha’s Vineyard vacation. The studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments are a great value, and they offer all the amenities of home with a pool, playground, and a picnic area complete with barbecue grills.

The Edgartown Commons vacation/rental condo at 20 Peases Point Way, Unit 7 stands out from many others. The unit was fully renovated in 2021 with new granite counters, subway tile, stainless steel appliances, fresh paint, floors, and furnishings with a stylish beach house decor. Edgartown Commons is in the historic heart of Edgartown Village near the harbor, Fuller St., and Lighthouse beach, with many amenities, including swimming pool and patio, pool house with shower and coin-op laundry, BBQ/picnic areas, playground, WiFi, and A/C . . .

Staying in?

We realize Connie Berry’s Comfort Casserole ala her old Moosewood cookbook does not include a magazine-worthy photo. But we also know that it’s delicious because she’s told us that many, many times. Tonight seems like a very good night to make a big casserole before the storm sets in.

A remarkable Island story
Island-born Sarah "Sally" (Norton) Wilbur led an amazing and difficult life during the decades after the American Revolution. She had two sons and four grandsons in uniform during the Civil War; four of them would die in it. Her grandfather was Major Peter Norton — a storied sheriff, deacon, and county militia officer for whom Major’s Cove is named. This Was Then columnists Chris Baer and Justin Baer describe the impact Wilbur and her family had on Martha’s Vineyard in their latest piece.
