Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1965, civil rights leaders, including John Lewis, were beaten during a civil rights protest in Selma, Alabama. In 2020, we spoke with Linda Early Chastang about her work with Lewis. You can check it out here. Today is also National Cereal Day. What’s your favorite? Let us know, just for Kix. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

We repurposed a Tisbury B&B and made a new home for year-round MV Hospital employees. Watch our film to learn how we did it! To help us end housing insecurity on our Island click here to donate now.
Great news
For the first time in several months, the Island’s number of COVID-19 positive test results were in single digits. The Island reported just two cases last week and, based on CDC metrics, the Island is at low risk for community spread. All of this is good news as Islanders returned from their winter vacations to schools with mask mandates lifted. Editor George Brennan has this update.
Drawing the county line
It wasn’t exactly a line in the sand, but county officials want state Sen. Julian Cyr, D-Truro, and state Rep. Dylan Fernandes, D-Falmouth, to know they don’t appreciate the legislature stepping in to suggest Steamship Authority legislation without being consulted. Island leaders on both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are concerned that by opening the enabling act, others will see further amendments that would usurp the authority of the islands. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the details.

Strong show of support
Some were carrying signs. Some were wearing blue and yellow. All were showing their support for the people of Ukraine who have been under attack by Russia over the past week. The rally at Five Corners was a nonpartisan event aimed at giving folks on the Island an opportunity to get together and show their support. Writer Abigail Rosen has this story.

Quote of the Day
"The first line of the Ukrainian anthem is ‘Ukraine is not dead yet.’ They just keep going; as occupiers, marauders, and aggressors keep trying to wipe them out over and over again. This is a distinct culture with a distinct history and a distinct language. I speak Ukrainian because of the determination of my parents to keep this culture, this language, and this identity alive."
–Iya Labonka, a co-organizer of Saturday’s rally at Five Corners, speaking to those gathered

Hot Topic Comment
Eric Johnson is one of the many people commenting on the devastating fire at Ocean View. "Let’s hope that the powers to be pave the way for a speedy recovery and don’t tie them up in endless red tape and reviews as we [have seen] all too many times before. Best of luck on getting back soon!"

Hot Topic Letter
Elizabeth McBride wrote about the fire that destroyed her family’s longtime Vineyard Haven home. "As I walked off the ferry on February 9th, into the arms of my son, and stood in the Steamship Authority parking lot crying uncontrollably, I feared I would be broken forever. But something else happened instead. The Island opened its arms to us, rallying around my family in full force. Before the fire’s last embers were even out, we had a roof over our heads, closets full of clothes, groceries and meals delivered to our temporary doorstep, toothbrushes, winter coats, and gift cards for future use. Friends, family and strangers alike reached out to check on us and offer a shoulder to cry on. The response was overwhelming."

Staying in?
We are the first to say that we haven’t tried this recipe from IGI circa 2012: Kale Salad. Oh we’ve had kale salad, but not this one. This one puts raw kale and crispy roasted kale together for what must be a little bit of heaven on a plate.

Shopping on Circuit
Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs is undoubtedly the busiest pedestrian thoroughfare during the off-season and summer months, and with good reason. There are many fun shops offering unique selections of goods, and they’re all within a few minutes walking distance of each other. Don’t let the ongoing sidewalk construction stop you from checking out all there is to see on Circuit Avenue, and supporting local businesses while you’re enjoying your stroll. Read Gwyn McAllister’s piece on some of the stores she recommends folks pop into.
