Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1945, the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland was liberated. Today is also National Chocolate Cake Day, which sounds like a fantastic way to end a work week. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

New Art arriving daily. Open 7 days a week from 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday, and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. A warm welcome awaits you.
Snow where to hide
Be prepared for a blizzard of snow puns, as well as blizzard conditions on Saturday. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Martha’s Vineyard and is predicting more than a foot of snow, particularly if there’s no changeover to rain. In advance of the storm, towns are sending out guidance and the SSA is warning of trip cancellations. We’ve got you covered, well, like a foot of snow. Read more here. And while power outages will likely be on this weekend’s menu, we got a taste of one Thursday morning.
Five out of six
Well, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional School district will be going to the Massachusetts School Building Authority with a super majority in support of doing a feasibility study on a high school construction project. MVRHS actually has support from Oak Bluffs, too, although it comes with a caveat. Reporters Rich Saltzberg and Eunki Seonwoo have the update on West Tisbury and Tisbury weighing in.

Unmasking an oversight
Last we checked, Martha’s Vineyard was still part of the United States. However, the Island has been left out of — at least for now — the federal distribution of 400 million N95 masks. The Times checked with Island pharmacies and they’ve not been contacted. Health officials on the Island say they’re trying to get some masks to distribute. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story.
MEETINGS
There are no meetings scheduled for Friday, but we have a feeling a lot of people will be meeting up in the supermarket aisles ahead of the nor’easter that’s expected Friday night into Saturday.

Quote of the Day
"Science is always evolving, obviously. Science isn’t always correct, and I admit that. But as far as I’m concerned, I want to do due diligence. I don’t really care about the politics of the whole thing."
–Oak Bluffs health board chair William White during the latest discussion of the controversial synthetic turf track and field project at MVRHS

Hot Topic Comment
Matthew Ryan Shaffer commented on a case involving a missing gun. "What good are gun laws if the very people licensed to have a firearm lose the damn thing? … The gun laws are only as strong as the weakest link in the chain."

Hot Topic Letter
Eugenie Kuffler of Woods Hole raises concerns about the size and scale of the Woods Hole terminal. "I note that the 200 percent increase of pedestrian space, acclaimed by the architects, was acquired by extending the Steamship Authority’s whole property 90 feet into Great Harbor. Considering that the breadth of the three slips is approximately 400 feet, that represented a taking of 36,000 square feet of public waterway. The immense berths now partially block the exit from the Eel Pond, are highly unattractive from the harborside, and have destroyed the overall proportions of the site, both landside and waterside."
Today: Cast iron has so much versatility for cooking and baking— you can make delicious stews, shepherd’s pie, and desserts like apple crisp and pineapple upside-down cake. You can even sear the perfect steak. Spice Club member Karen Mort will be on Zoom Thursday via the Vineyard Haven library to show folks how to season cast iron pans and preserve them for years to come. There will be cooking demonstrations and recipe suggestions so that people can put their cast iron to use at home. From 6 to 7 pm. –Lucas Thors

Join the Oak Bluffs library from 7 to 8 pm for a Zoom chat with the virtual Vineyard book club. The group will be discussing "The Emperor of Ocean Park," by Stephen L. Carter. The novel is set in two privileged worlds: the upper tier of the African American society of the Eastern Seaboard, the Black elite families who summer on Martha’s Vineyard, and the inner circle of an Ivy League school. –L.T.

Tomorrow: The gnome hunt is back at Polly Hill Arboretum for the winter. Families can bring their kids to the arboretum anytime during the day and follow clues to find as many helpful garden gnomes as possible. Find clues in a brochure box next to the visitor center, where there is also a winter tree guide. Gnomes will be on the grounds through March. –L.T.

Natural beauty
"While a number of Islanders have taken to fashioning jewelry from colorful quahog shells, Frank Rapoza of West Tisbury has taken the art form to a different level by using the unique purple-and-white raw material to create wonderful mixed-media mosaic images that often reflect a life spent near the sea," writes Gwyn McAllister.
