Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to those who celebrate. Flashback to 2018 when the MV Martha’s Vineyard got stranded between Martha’s Vineyard and Woods Hole during a crossing. Since it’s St. Patrick’s Day, it’s no wonder that it’s also National Corned Beef and Cabbage Day. Flashback to when Dave Plath made his in a pressure cooker. Tisbury School by 2024?
The $55 million renovation and addition project at Tisbury School is expected to be completed by March 1, 2024, according to a joint meeting of the Tisbury select board, school committee, and school building committee. The three boards met with the architects and contractor for the project to get an update on timelines. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the details.
A legislative COO
State Rep. Dylan Fernandes, D-Falmouth, was before the Dukes County Commission on Wednesday where he was asked to explain legislation that would require a chief operating officer (COO) for the Steamship Authority and term limits for SSA board members. Since the SSA moved to add a COO earlier this week, Fernandes said he will be removing that part of the legislation. Reporter Abigail Rosen has the details.

Pond scum
The Island ponds are beautiful to look at and fun to kayak on, but there could be danger lurking in them. Several of the Island ponds have had elevated levels of cyanobacteria, which can be dangerous for humans and deadly for family pets. That’s why The Great Pond Foundation has been gathering data on cyanobacteria and trying to trace the source of it. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has the details.
MEETINGS
Tomorrow is Friday already. Rejoice in its meeting-less glory.

South Shore Waterfront Sanctuary Sponsored

Surrounded by nature, this is a South Shore waterfront sanctuary. The presence of the peaceful placid pond combined with the power of the ocean and the sound of the waves is part of the special experience of living here. It has a particular sense of privacy and peacefulness. Hidden away on a quiet road of lilacs and summer cottages, the yard is defined by stone walls, lush gardens, natural art objects and several outdoor patios. Just beyond the lawn is a sandy path for easy access to the ocean and pond. The feeling inside the tasteful home is one of understated pleasing ambience.
Quote of the Day
"We haven’t even seen the entire visual impact to Menemsha this is going to bring with it. I would ask that the selectmen give some thought to just chalking this up to being an honest mistake, circle back to something that’s appropriate and fitting with the marine environment in Menemsha — the old fishing village environment we’re all so committed to honoring."–Matt Poole on a 30-foot antenna that’s been installed as part of a security camera system for Menemsha

Hot Topic Comment
Don Keller commented on a story about a man accused of leading police on a pursuit through three towns. "Great that the police cut off the chase due to unsafe conditions and radioed ahead. Nobody was hurt, and the thief was caught. I am often impressed with the professionalism and common sense of our police departments."

Hot Topic Letter
Dianne Poole wrote about the loss of Everett Poole. "The last 12 years with Everett were the most remarkable of my life. I will always be grateful for his integrity, his humor, and his love. I knew, when we began our lives together, that I would be sharing him with his children and the town of Chilmark/Island of Martha’s Vineyard."
Today: Chef Look Cooks a Shepherd’s Pie Potato Boat tonight. That looks fabulous. Doesn’t look much like my shepherd’s pie. I think I need to take this class. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

The Ritz reopens after a winter break with my all-time favorite Island musicians — Rose Guerin, Sean McMahon, and Ted MacInness — for a Holy Shamrock and Roll Revival show. You don’t want to miss them. I’ll be the one dancing like Elaine on "Seinfeld." 8 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: I’m suggesting this one because I really want to see it. Geoff Currier said it was terrific and we usually like the same films. It’s gathering up awards all over the place. "Belfast" at the M.V. Film Center. 4 pm. –C.B.

Movies! Check out what’s playing this weekend at Island theaters here.

Staying in?
Remember when Connie Berry overcame her fear of the kitchen mandoline to make this very tasty Shaved Brussels Salad? It’s a nice alternative for those who aren’t big fans of boiled cabbage. And it’s such a pretty color.

A Trustee-d addition
Darci Schofield is the new Islands director for the Trustees of Reservations, replacing Sam Hart. Hart served in the post until he took a job with the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. In an interview with reporter Lucas Thors, Schofield explains that she first came to Martha’s Vineyard on a vacation. She knows the Island is more than a vacation spot and is looking forward to working here. You can read more about Schofield’s new role here.
