Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1942, Daylight Saving Time was introduced for the first time by President Roosevelt to conserve fuel. Today is National Bagel and Lox Day, National Pizza Day, and National Cut the Cord Day. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Remembering Albert
Islanders are remembering Albert Hutchinson, the man Martha’s Vineyard Hospital says is the Island’s first official COVID-19 death. Meanwhile, Gov. Charlie Baker announced on Wednesday that he will lift the mask mandate for students in K-12 schools. That may prompt the Island’s boards of health to take another look at the indoor mask mandates sooner. Reporter Brian Dowd has this update.

Record breakers
The Tisbury Police Department purged 70 boxes of public records. The department sought permission from the Supervisor of Public Records, but the decision to destroy records came up in court cases where two individuals allege their charges were racially motivated. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.

Hail to the chief
Oak Bluffs Police Chief Erik Blake has announced his intention to retire after 35 years in law enforcement. He’s been the police chief in O.B. since 2003. Blake was praised for his work at the department, as well as his participation in other civic organizations. Reporter Brian Dowd has this story.
MEETINGS
No meetings are scheduled on Thursday.

Quote of the Day
“Any loss of life, even one, is super unfortunate. It serves as a costly reminder of the fact that we need to continue to make good decisions about who we associate with, what we know about them, where we go in public.”–Edgartown health agent Matt Poole on the Island’s first COVID-19 death

Hot Topic Comment
Keith Chatinover commented on a story about transfer fee bills under consideration. “There does not need to be a tension between our Island’s strong record of conservation and our need for affordable housing. We can and will keep our Island green while also making sure that we can house our nurses and teachers. The — year-round — housing stock is severely inadequate for what our population demands.”

Hot Topic Letter
Dana Hodsdon commented on some of the rich history of the house that was destroyed by fire in Vineyard Haven. “That house was originally sitting in the middle of Owen Park. William Barry Owen bought that land and moved 3 houses that were there. He had them moved so he could build a house up on William Street for an extended view to the harbor.”
Today: Art historian Janet Mandel leads an illustrated talk, Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman, with the Edgartown library. Learn how this Black sculptor became a star of the Harlem Renaissance, celebrating African American culture through her work. 7 pm. -Connie Berry

The Oak Bluffs library hosts Researching Genealogy with Eric Migdal. Learn about DNA in your genealogical research in this session. Discover what your roots are and maybe it’ll help you grow. Who knows. 7 pm. -C.B.
Tomorrow: The Charter School celebrates its 25th anniversary with a speaker series. Darius Coombs, cultural and outreach coordinator for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, gives a virtual presentation on how the Wampanoag people and Noepe are intrinsically connected. 5:30 pm.-C.B.

Love birds

The answers provided by the pairs will have you giggling and taking a long walk down memory lane. Check out the story here.
