Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1983, President Ronald Reagan referred to the Soviet Union as the "evil empire." Today is International Women’s Day and National Proofreaders Day. We celebrate two women who keep us out of grammar jail — Barbara Davis and Irene Ziebarth. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Taking positions
In agreeing to support a chief operating officer and a grants administrator, the Steamship Authority port council also criticized overreach by legislators. State Sen. Julian Cyr, D-Truro, and state Rep. Dylan Fernandes, D-Falmouth, recently filed legislation that would require the hiring of a COO and would set term limits for the SSA board. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this story.
Healthy outlook
The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School committee heard a report from the school-based behavioral coordinator about the possibility of having a health center to meet the needs of students and staff at the school. Meanwhile, the school committee also supported a plan by the Sharks to serve beer and wine at games this summer. Reporter Lucas Thors has this story. And reporter Eunki Seonwoo has a story from Edgartown where the select board gave an initial thumbs up to a funding formula proposed by Chilmark to pay for a new high school. Here’s that story.

Hope floats
David Berube is the latest Islander trying to find a way to support Ukraine. Berube, a scalloper out of Edgartown, recently added the color yellow to his blue boat — the colors of the Ukrainian flag. In a conversation with reporter Eunki Seonwoo, Berube said he will keep the boat those colors for as long as the conflict continues. You can read more here.
MEETINGS
The West Tisbury select board meets at 4:30 pm Wednesday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"And he said to me this is going to be no problem. Don’t worry about it. I am very worried about it."–County commissioner Tristan Israel on a Steamship Authority bill filed by state Rep. Dylan Fernandes, D-Falmouth, and state Sen. Julian Cyr, D-Truro

Hot Topic Comment
Kate Lane commented in response to a letter written by Elizabeth McBride. "Elizabeth, I’m so deeply sorry about GinGin & Dewey. Your neighbors and everyone who tackled the fire showed such bravery. Thank you for sharing this touching look at your family’s history with us."

Hot Topic Letter
Janet Hefler wrote to warn about a potential scammer. "It occurred to me that I should warn other Islanders, and in the interest of due diligence, I emailed Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to ask about ‘Amy’s’ offer. Marissa Lefebvre, communications specialist, emailed me back right away: ‘I can confirm that this is not a call from the hospital’."
Today: The Oak Bluffs library hosts its Online Graphic Novel Book Club tonight. They’ll help you access this month’s book and then you’ll gather virtually to talk about it. This is a good way to learn more about the genre. Is that a genre? I just like the way that word sounds. 7 pm. –Connie Berry

The Tuesday Writing and Poetry Series continues with Ron Slate at Pathways. You can attend in person or online. Don’t you love options? This week’s guest is author Hananah Zaheer. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Someone please let George Brennan know that I’ll be taking a long lunch tomorrow to attend this Figure Skating Session for all ages. Tell him it has to do with my professional development. Noon. –C.B.

Kicking off Act Two
A new secondhand store is coming to Main Street in Tisbury that will serve as a community center and a place where folks of all levels of need can turn to for support. Kevin Ryan and Alissa Keenan, former owners and operators of the Edgartown Boys and Girls Club Secondhand Store, are starting up a new operation called Act Two that will benefit Island theater, arts, music, and education. They’ll be opening their doors soon, and are excited to see friends and neighbors stop by for affordable clothing, furniture, jewelry, housewares, and more. Read Lucas Thors’ story here (he’s pretty excited about the new thrifting opportunity).
