Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1931, the "Star Spangled Banner" became the official U.S. National Anthem. Today is also National Soup it Forward Day and National Cold Cuts Day. Soup and a sandwich? We’re saying so long to reporter Brian Dowd today. He’s been a great addition to The Times family for the past four years. Fair winds and following seas. Ocean View Restaurant in Oak Bluffs was destroyed by fire on Thursday. Firefighters were called to the scene at about 10 am and rolled up on smoke pouring out of the building. Soon the building was engulfed in flames and other Island fire departments were called in to battle the blaze. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the story, photos, and video from the scene.
West Tisbury will hold its annual town meeting on the date required by a town bylaw. However, the meeting will be held at 6 pm, giving voters a head start on getting the town’s business done. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has those details, as well as the other business completed by the board on Wednesday.
The Massachusetts School Building Authority has given initial approval to the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School project. In a letter that arrived Wednesday, the MSBA board informed the school district that it was accepted into this year’s eligibility period. During that time, the high school has more hurdles to clear in the grant approval process. It comes as the Island towns have shown support for the project, but with some hesitation about how the costs will be divided. Reporter Lucas Thors has this story.

Quote of the Day
"Thank you to this board. You have made tremendous decisions over the past two years, and you have kept us safe." Oak Bluffs library director Allyson Malik ahead of Wednesday’s vote to lift the indoor mask mandate on Island.

Hot Topic Comment
R. Scott Patterson commented on the decision to suspend the mask mandate. "Not really, we don’t enjoy wearing masks either but the situation dictated it. I am glad they removed the mandate and probably won’t be wearing a mask in most situations but probably will in others."

Hot Topic Letter
Eileen Reilly wrote about the dangers caused by speeding on the Island. "As I started to turn sideways, as there was nowhere to retreat backward on the sidewalk because of thick shrubs, I saw the truck's right front and rear tires scraping along the short curb as it barreled by me. That short curb miraculously kept the truck from jumping up onto the sidewalk, and seriously if not fatally injuring me!"
Today: Peaked Hill Studio offers a Community Kaiut Yoga Class. This always sounds like very wise yoga to me when I read about it. If I were going to try yoga, I’d start with this. Online or in person. 5:30 pm.–Connie Berry

Did I tell you I had a guitar lesson a couple of weeks ago? I loved it. I might do it again. I just need to figure out how to make my fingers grow an inch or so, then I’ll be great at it. Uke Jam Night at the YMCA. Try it. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: If your kids are having a staycation during this break, try a Wild Animal Indoor Scavenger Hunt at the Oak Bluffs library. Pick up a clue sheet then begin the search. I wouldn’t mind trying this myself. 10 am to 5 pm. –C.B.

CONTEST ANSWER
Wednesday's correct answer: Laurie Perry

The seeds of love were planted for Islanders Rob Chaunce and Wendi Goldfarb when they met at an art exhibit in 2015. When Wendi moved in with Rob to live at his West Tisbury farm, his already expansive garden filled with flowers, shrubs, and fruit trees grew to five times its original size. The garden-loving couple is having a fun time exploring their unique interests with each other and making their home even more of an oasis. Read Valerie Sonnenthal’s recent Gardens of Love column to learn all about how the pair’s love has grown, and continues to flourish.
