Ready for a COO
The Steamship Authority will begin looking for a chief operating officer after the ferry line’s board agreed the position would be helpful in acting as a chief of staff for the general manager. But while the board supports adding the position, they continued to decry a bill sponsored by Rep. Dylan Fernandes and Sen. Julian Cyr that would write the position into the SSA’s enabling act. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the latest.
Getting ready
On Monday, the Edgartown select board approved the warrants for the April 12 annual and special town meetings at Old Whaling Church. Town administrator James Hagerty went through some of the highlights, including the budget increase for next fiscal year. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this update.

Wild up-Island morning
Police arrested a 20-year-old Island man who they say stole two vehicles, broke into a house, and led police on a three-town pursuit before crashing in West Tisbury. Jackson Wojnowski is facing a litany of charges as a result of the alleged break-in and theft of the motor vehicles. That photo shows tire tracks headed off the road near the intersection of Middle Road and Music Street. Editor George Brennan has this story.
MEETINGS
The Tisbury select board meets at 3 pm Wednesday. Remote access. Here is the agenda. The select board then meets jointly with the school committee at 5:30 pm. Here is that agenda.

Quote of the Day
"The single reason? The housing costs. The housing situation. That’s huge for us. Two of them were physicians. If anyone can afford it, it’s the docs, right?"–Martha’s Vineyard Hospital president and CEO Denise Schepici on how a lack of housing is creating a crisis for the hospital

Hot Topic Comment
Mike Ack commented on the most recent numbers for COVID-19 on the Island. "It’s the week after February vacation; and just like last year, there is a slight spike. It will happen again next year too. No need to panic. I find it refreshing to actually be able to see most people’s faces again."

Hot Topic Letter
Nis Kildegaard of Edgartown wrote about how the funding formula for MVRHS is indefensible. "The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School is the only regional agency on the Island that charges different property owners different tax rates, depending upon where they live.
The elementary schools of Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Tisbury apply the same tax rate to every dollar’s worth of property in town, from their grandest mansions — summer estates that will never be home to a public school student — to their humblest year-round family residences. No one in any Island town is going street to street, hunting where the elementary schoolchildren live, and charging a higher tax rate to those neighborhoods."

Today: West Tisbury is one town on-Island that is leading the way in the transition to electric and alternative energies, and the West Tisbury energy committee will host a Zoom discussion on the town meeting warrant article regarding goals to go 100 percent electric. The information session starts at 5 pm today, and is free and open to the public. –Lucas Thors

St. Patrick’s Day is on our doorstep, and that means spring is too (I can’t wait to charge my Vitamin D levels)! The Vineyard Haven library wants to gear up for the special holiday with a traditional Irish cooking lesson. Learn about delicious boxty pancakes and Concannon, a winery and brewery in Ireland. Karen Mort will also demonstrate how she makes her Irish seafood stew. From 6 to 7:15 pm on Zoom. –L.T.

Tomorrow: Sign onto Zoom Sunday from 5:30 to 6:45 pm for a special presentation by Polly Hill Arboretum executive director Tim Boland and plant recorder Liz Thomas about their seed collecting expedition around the United States. Get a peek at some of the unique ecosystems they visited, and the folks who dedicate themselves to understanding these plants and habitats. –L.T.

Arrow-dynamics
It takes a lot of dedication, persistence, and patience to be a successful hunter. The task of setting up a stand 20 feet high in a tree and then waiting for the right moment to take the shot is not an easy one, and using a bow and arrow makes things significantly trickier. But there are many bowhunters on Martha’s Vineyard, and while the satisfaction of hard work paying off is a big part of the draw, most are just thinking about some delicious grilled venison backstrap. Reporter and woodland sports enthusiast Lucas Thors went out to the Rod & Gun Club to talk to a longtime hunter about what makes him want to pick up a bow.
